hard drive. Believe it or not, they still exist and are still the best value for money when it comes to absolutely large storage. Take his three new products from Western Digital as an example. These 2.5-inch drives (the kind you used to have in laptops) aren’t all that fast, but it’s hard to keep this many files in your pocket for this little cost with flash included .
Today, the company announced: WD My Passport Ultra, WD_Black P10 Game Driveand SanDisk G Drive Armor ATD All portable hard drives come in a new 6 terabyte capacity. This is about 5 to 10 times more storage capacity than the average new laptop or desktop with USB 3.2 Gen 1. It will take a very long time to actually fill up the drive, but it is possible.
The three different types of drives come with different enclosures. The Game Drive is the least expensive at $189.99, but it has a disappointing “Micro-B” USB connection (the weird his MicroUSB type with the extra-wide add-on). The other two, the button-down My Passport Ultra for $205 and the rugged, ultra-protected G-Drive for $230 and come with USB-C. However, they should all have roughly the same performance. (All prices are from Western Digital’s online store; they tend to be significantly cheaper in retail stores over time.)
Think of the size and speed trade-off as a significant benefit. Western Digital’s largest portable SSD is SanDisk Extreme Portable, the list price is $360 for 4TB. The price per byte of these new high-capacity hard drives is effectively a third of that. When you have more time than money, you can’t ignore the savings.
