The WBA North serves women entrepreneurs in seven counties in Northeast Minnesota and Douglas County, Wisconsin

DULUTH, Minn. — On Monday women operated businesses were recognized for their part in the community.

Women’s Business Alliance North was named the 2024 Women’s Business Center of Excellence in Minnesota.

The WBA North provides support to female entrepreneurs through advising, training and opportunities. A discussion was held at Mexico Lindo for female businesses owners who shared their experiences around entrepreneurship.

“Ultimately, we are there to serve the women of our region,” said Sandi Larson, WBA North Director. “And it’s because they’ve taken the risk and because they have stepped out to do these things, that I’m now being recognized. We were just a small part of their bravery to step out and start their businesses and grow their businesses.”

One of the women at the discussion was Lorena Velez, who owns Mexico Lindo. Lorena took over the restaurant in 2020, and says she was able to do so because of the support around her.

“Even though I was in the industry already it felt like walking into complete darkness, but with great guidance and people supporting you, and being there with you, once again it’s a reality,” said Velez.

The WBA North serves women entrepreneurs in seven counties in Northeast Minnesota and Douglas County, Wisconsin. With a focus on assisting women of color and women from low-income households.
